Bill Duncan

Bill Duncan

Bill Duncan learned to ski at the age of 7 during visits to his aunts' home at Bear Mountain, and quit high school in the middle of his senior year in January 1943 to enlist in what later became the 10th Mountain Division.

The division had been formed barely two years earlier when Charles Minot Dole, then head of the National Ski Patrol, convinced the Army of the need for soldiers trained in mountain fighting, and distinguished itself in battles against the Germans in the Apennine Mountains in northern Italy during the winter of 1944-45.

Duncan was one of the original members of the Military Museum of Southern New England, which was founded in 1986. Duncan donated his wartime gear to the museum and it was used to create an exhibit honoring the 10th Mountain Division.
